Town of Wynyard

Skating Club

The Wynyard Skating Club offers a full time (2 days/week) and part time (1 day/week) CanSkate Program.  CanSkate is Canada’s flagship learn to skate program designed for beginners of all ages.  It focuses on fun participation and basic skill development to provide the foundation for enjoyment of ice sports of all kinds including hockey, ringette, and figure skating. Lessons are given in a group format and skaters progress at their own rate.  Our CanSkate coach for the 2016-2017 season is Laura McLeod.  She will be running an active program using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning.

CanSkate Program runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00-4:45pm.

The “Advanced CanSkate” program is part of the CanSkate program but for skaters in the latter stages of CanSkate and getting readying to move into StarSkate.  Typically for stages 5 and 6, this is a group lesson PLUS time to practice on ice on their own. Coached by Laura McLeod

Advanced CanSkate Program runs on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:45-6:00pm

**New this Season Synchronized Skating – Synchronized skating, or “synchro,” is a specialized discipline of skating involving groups of eight or more skaters performing various group formations and maneuvers. The objective is for the team to perform as one unit executing circles, blocks, lines, wheels and intersections in unison to the music, while demonstrating quality edges, power and flow. Synchro provides skaters with the foundations of strong skating, which they carry into whatever discipline they choose to pursue and because it’s done in a team, it adds a fun and social aspect too! Synchronized skating will be offered to the skaters in Advanced CanSkate and Jr STARSkate programs by coaches Laura McLeod and Sherryl Britton

The STARSkate program offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in dance, skills, FreeSkate and interpretive skating.  STARSkate stands for Skills, Tests, Achievement and Recognition.  Lessons may be taught in a group or private format.  Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada tests through a nationally standardized testing system.  Our StarSkate coaches are Julia McDougall and Sherryl Britton and Laura McLeod.

StarSkate Program runs on Tuesday 6:15-9:00pm AND Thursday 6:15-8:15pm
