Many of us on the prairies LOVE the unique taste of the Saskatoon berry. However, as our population increases and wild stands swindle, our orchard offers an attractive alternative with easily picked, high quality, commercially produced berries. Bugle Ridge Berry Farm was established in 1995 and will operate as a Saskatoon berry U-Pick. As it takes a few years after the initial planting for the trees to bear fruit, we are optimistic we will have a small amount of berries in 1997, with 1998 as the target to possibly offer U-Pick to the public. We are located 7 miles south of Dafoe on Highway #6 (look for sign next fall). Lakeside Global Grains employs between seven and twelve full and part-time workers at any given time during the year. Lakeside Processors Ltd. is a joint venture between Lakeside Ventures and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. The company was started to take advantage of the vast amounts of pulse crops grown in a 70 km. range of the plant location, although that range has expanded dramatically. The goal of Lakeside Global Grains was, and is, to provide a facility where both the producers and partners can benefit in the trade of pulse crops. Although Lakeside Global Grains does not buy the product, we facilitate that process. We then take that product in, run it through our cleaning system, and package and load it for the export market. When Lakeside Global Grains was first started, the main focus was on procuring and processing field peas and lentils. Although processing field peas is still the main focus, we have expanded our system to enable us to process a variety of pulse crops and oil seeds. Lakeside Global Grains now processes several varieties of yellow mustard, brown mustard, flax, and canola. LorMar Orchard, owned by Lorne & Marilynn Lazorko, opened its gates to the public in 2000 for U-pick and pre-picked fruit sales. In July, we have strawberries and Saskatoons, followed by raspberries, pin cherries, Nanking cherries, and sour cherries (pie cherries). In August, we offer chokecherries – red, black, and yellow varieties, and black currants, as well as some early apples and plums. September brings more apple varieties, along with high bush cranberries and purple grapes. We grow cucumbers, sweet corn, and potatoes for sale, and we usually have homemade jams, jellies, and syrups available. We are located just off Highway #35, 18 km’s south of Elfros. Wynyard Technologies makes and bottles liquid ammonium sulphate (8-0-0-9). This surfactant is then sold to grain companies and fertilizer blenders. Wynyard Technologies also fishes Big Quill Lake for brine shrimp and diaptomus. Using a large pontoon boat with nets, we sell these unique lake creatures to the aquaculture industry for fish food. Wynyard Technologies has also developed a calf puller gauge to determine pulling strength when assisting a live birth. This is sold to vets and cow/calf producers.
