Wynyard also has the identity of being twinned with a town in south-central France. The twinning became a reality in 1972, after the town of Les Martres-de-Veyre had honored a Canadian soldier from Wynyard who became their war hero during WW2. The soldier, Peter Dmytruk had joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served as a tail gunner with the 405th Bomber Squadran. In a mission over France, Flight Sergeant Dmytruk’s plane was shot down near the small town of Les Martres-de-Veyre. Over time, he joined the French Resistance in the German-occupied France, and ended up losing his life fighting for the French people.
Wynyard is also renowned for being located along the largest North American Bird Migration Flyway and is located in the Quill Lakes Important Bird Area. Every year, over a million migratory birds pass through this Flyway.
